Passenger transport maintains a recovery trend in the 1st quarter

Passenger transport maintained its recovery trend in the first quarter, with growth in air, river, rail, metro, road and freight transport, compared to the same period in 2021, according to INE data released this Monday.

In the first three months of the year, domestic airports handled 8.3 million passengerscorresponding to a growth of 465.7%, compared to the same period of 2021 and 212.9% compared to the previous quarter.

However, compared to the first quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, there was a decrease of 25.4%.

In the period under review, they were transported by train. 37.6 million passengers and by metro 46.2 millionwhich correspond to increases of 94.4% and 135.7%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2021.

Compared to the first three months of 2019, there was an increase of 1.1% and a decrease of 25.8%, respectively.

Between January and March, passenger transport by waterway registered an increase of 105.2% in relation to the same period of the previous year and 37.2% in relation to the previous quarter, reaching 3.6 million passengers.

Compared to the first quarter of 2019, there was a reduction of 25.7%.

As for the transport of goods, by air, there was a growth of 37.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, (+11.9% compared to the first quarter of 2019).

In railways, there was an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period in 2021 (+7.5% in the previous quarter) and a decrease of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2019.

By sea, there was an increase of 0.8% compared to the first quarter of 2021 (-1.2% in 4Q 2021), also registering a reduction compared to the first quarter of 2019 (-5.5%).

At last, road transport increases by 8.5% and handles 39.9 million tonsthe same figure as in the first quarter of 2019 (-0.03%).
