Finland admits that NATO entry may be “frozen” by Turkey

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin warned on Tuesday of the need to reach an agreement with Turkey on the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO before the Madrid summit, which will take place on June 28.

Between the West and Russia, Erdogan’s dangerous game. Is the threat to veto the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO serious or a hoax?

“If we don’t solve the problems before Madrid, there is a risk that the situation will freeze,” warned Marín.

The Finnish prime minister, who was participating in a press conference with her Swedish and Norwegian counterparts, also took the opportunity to criticize the Turkish position, saying that until recently the country was not opposed to the entry of Sweden and Finland into the Alliance. “They did a 180 degree turn. We take these matters seriously, but it is also Turkey’s responsibility to find a solution.”

Turkey has opposed the entry of the two countries into the Atlantic Alliance, accusing them of giving asylum to members of the PKK, the Kurdish party listed as terrorist by the EU and Turkey. According to NATO rules, any new entry must be decided with the agreement of all the member states of the Alliance.

Sanna Marin admitted that there may be some “misunderstandings” in this matter, but reinforced that she considers the legislation of her country to be “precise and clear”. “Finland does not support terrorists,” she said.
