Indian police said protesters pelted police with rocks and set trains on fire on Friday as protests against a new military conscription system rage into their second day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government this week unveiled a conscription reform for its 1.38 million military, aimed at lowering the average age of individuals and cutting pension costs.
But many potential recruits object, saying they should be allowed to serve more than four years. Opposition parties and some members of the ruling Modi Bharatiya Janata party say the new system will increase the already high unemployment rate.
On Thursday, police fired into the air to disperse a stone-throwing crowd in the northern state of Haryana. Police said protesters rallied again on Friday, set fire to train cars at at least two stations in the eastern state of Bihar and disrupted rail traffic.
