The Brazilian Federal Police announced that they have officially confirmed that the body buried in the Amazon belongs to the British journalist Dam Phillips, who disappeared during an investigation trip.
Bruno Araujo Pereira, a 57-year-old British freelance journalist and Brazilian researcher, disappeared on June 5 during a research trip to the Javari Valley.
Police said in a statement that the journalist’s body was identified by a forensic examination.
Police said they were completing the verification process of the exhumed body, which could include Pereira’s body.
The body was found and arrived in Brasilia on Thursday evening for a forensic examination.
Ten days after the disappearance of Phillips and Pereira, a suspect confessed that he had buried their bodies and was found in what he referred to as the “human corpse”.
This region is close to the borders of Peru and Colombia and is known for its great danger. There is widespread drug and fish trafficking and illegal gold mining.
In recent years, the country has become a strategic hub for drug trafficking gangs carrying cocaine or cannabis produced in neighboring countries.
