Israel. Coalition presents proposal to dissolve the government next week. Country advances to elections

There is an end in sight for Israel’s 36th government. Without consensus to stabilize the government, the coalition, formed in June 2021, issued a statement informing the intention of a voluntary dissolution of the executive.

The proposal to dissolve the government is expected to be presented next week, putting the country on the path to new elections. The revelation is made in a joint statement signed by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid.

After the dissolution of the Knesset, Lapid will serve as prime minister until a new government is elected. The Jerusalem Post said that the elections are expected to take place in late October, due to legal restrictions and the holiday period.

In statements after this announcement of the fall of a coalition considered “unusual”, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz shared that the now-fallen government “did a very good job”. “I think the government has done a very good job over the last year. It’s a shame that the country has to be dragged into elections,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters.

This will be the fifth time that Israel will go to elections in three and a half years.
