Swedish city police warn of increased shootings due to the instability of the underworld

Police in Uppsala, Sweden, have warned that the city could face increased gun attacks due to the power vacuum between criminal gangs, with several high-profile gangsters currently behind bars.

Uppsala police intelligence director Jail Polarevius said the city could face another wave of gunfire this summer as many gang leaders or prominent members are currently incarcerated, creating a power vacuum in the city.

“The loss has improved. Polarevius told Swedish broadcaster SVT that while some gangs demonstrate their status with cars and clothes, others do so by committing acts of violence.

You want to create status and you do it by walking and shooting,” he said, noting that there are about five or six criminal gangs currently active in the city.

In the last five years, there have been 115 gun attacks in Uppsala county, mostly in Uppsala city. In total, 43 people were injured, 11 people died.

From 2019 to 2020, shootings dropped in Uppsala, but intelligence director Polarevius said the police would never say they were ending gang activity, saying, “You’re never going to do that, hacking all gangs is a good slogan in politics but it can’t be accomplished. There are always new ones.”

Shooting, particularly lethal predation, has been high over the past few years, with an average of about 40 deaths per year since 2017.

There have been several high-profile deaths last year, including 19-year-old rapper Einar, who was shot and killed south of Stockholm in a conflict believed to be linked to organized crime.

In another incident in July, a Swedish police officer was shot dead in Gothenburg. The 17-year-old was later arrested in connection with the death of an officer believed to have been caught in the crossfire while trying to kill a gang.

In the first three months of this year, the number of gun deaths has more than tripled compared to the same period in 2021, with 17 people being shot across the country.
