Singapore confirmed the first monkeypox infection in the territory and Southeast Asia, via an imported case, the city-state’s Health Ministry announced Tuesday.
A 42-year-old man of British origin who works as a flight attendant tested positive for the disease on Monday, after having been in Singapore between June 15 and 17 and again on June 19.
The patient is in stable condition. admitted to the National Center for Infectious Diseases in Singapore.
Local authorities have started tracing the patient’s contacts.with 13 people identified up to the date they are serving a 21 days of quarantine.
The chances of more people becoming infected in the places the patient visited on the island during the short stay are low, the ministry said.
The last recorded case of Monkeypox in Singapore dates back to 2019.
The resurgence of the disease coincides with a rise in Covid-19 infections last week in Singapore, mainly due to Omicron’s BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants keeping the island, which has enjoyed high opening levels since the beginning of the year, on alert.
