It was the main battlefront in Ukraine in recent weeks. With approximately 100,000 inhabitants, Severodonetsk, in the Lugansk region, was conquered this Saturday by Russian forces. The city’s mayor, Serhiy Haidai, admitted that a Ukrainian troops withdrew of the town, in a scenario where 90% of the city is “destroyed”: “It will be very difficult to survive there”.
On the Russian side, the taking of Severodonetsk is seen as a “successful” operation, while the Ukraine devalues the loss of the city as a “tactical retreat”. “Holding posts for months just to be there is pointless,” Serhiy Haidai acknowledged. At a time when the offensive has been going on for more than five months, is Russia’s victory there strategically important?
