Prominent Republicans could run against Trump in 2024

Republican Representative Liz Cheney, who is involved in the investigation into last year’s attack on the Capitol building, did not rule out running for former US President Donald Trump in the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential race, saying: May issue recommendations for criminal prosecution.

“The most important thing to do is protect the country from Donald Trump,” Cheney said in an interview with ABC on Sunday.

Cheney will sit on the House committee on the Jan. 6, 2021, invasion of the Capitol by Trump supporters, while confirming the presidential election won by his rival, Joe Biden.

“A dangerous man like Trump should never come near the Oval Office,” Cheney said, insisting the Republican Party “can’t survive” a new inauguration.

In this interview, he added that the committee may refer “several recommendations” to the Ministry of Justice to pursue criminal charges against the former president.

“Ultimately, the Justice Department will make a decision,” Cheney said when asked if the committee’s hearings indicated that Trump should be criminally prosecuted.

He stressed: “We will decide as a committee” about a formal criminal referral to the Ministry of Justice to introduce charges against him.

“The Department of Justice should not wait for the Criminal Referral Committee to do that,” Cheney said.

No criminal charges have been brought against the current or former President of the United States.

In response to the question of what the accusations against the former president mean for the country, this member of parliament said: I am more concerned about what the people’s lack of accountability for what is happening here means.

A senior aide to the previous administration, Cassidy Hutchinson, caused an uproar last week when he told the committee that Trump wanted to drive the presidential car himself, not the chauffeur, in an effort to join the crowds heading to Capitol Hill.
