The body of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Tokyo on Saturday after he was assassinated in the western Japanese city of Nara during an election rally.
AFP reported that the morgue arrived at Shinzo Abe’s residence in Tokyo.
Television footage showed leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party, to which the former Japanese prime minister belongs, dressed in black and standing respectfully in line.
On Friday, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation announced that a prominent Japanese official had died of his injuries after being shot in the city of Nara.
Sources familiar with the ongoing investigation into the murder of Shinzo Abe have revealed the reasons that led him to assassinate the former Japanese prime minister.
Japan’s Kyodo news agency, citing sources familiar with the investigation, said Tetsuya Yamagami had told police of his plans to attack the leader of a religious group believed to have bankrupted his mother through donations.
Yamagami, 41, indicated no grudge against Abe, the sources said, but emphasized Abe’s support and promotion of the religious group.
According to these sources, Yamagami denied that Abe was killed because of his opposition to his political views.
