Fernando Farinha, Portuguese Colonial War Reporter, Dies at 81

Portuguese reporter Fernando Farinha, known for his coverage of the colonial war in Angola, died Tuesday in Cascais, the victim of a prolonged illness, at the age of 81, the family announced.

The journalist, who has lived in Angola since 1952, began his professional activity at “Comércio de Luanda”, write and photograph the movements of the Portuguese soldiers on all war fronts between 1961 and 1975.

To accompany the operations of the Portuguese military in Angolan territory, Farinha attended a commando course, another for paratroopers and learned to ride a horse.

Returning to Lisbon, he went to the “Diário de Notícias”, where he remained for 21 years and was awarded four prizes. Also won two awards from the Portuguese Press Club.
