Crimes recorded by the police, including rape, general sexual offenses and violence against persons, reached their highest levels since comparable records began in 2002.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), England and Wales recorded 6.3 million crimes in the year to March 2022, up 16% from the previous year.
So-called serious crimes appear to have increased further, with homicides increasing 25 percent to 710 and sex crimes increasing 32 percent to 194,683 crimes.
This includes the highest recorded number of rapes at 70,330.
Knife crime, an ongoing problem in the UK, rose a relatively modest 10% to 49,027 crimes, with the ONS reporting a rise in all forms of violence and sexual knife offenses other than attempted murder.
As ironic as it may seem, authorities are sometimes reluctant to recognize acts that look very much like attempted murder as attempted murder – as in the case of professional Afghan criminal Hamid Akhonzada, who forced a teenager to sleep on the floor of a public bus and “throws his head”. smashed into his back and throat with a sharp object described as a steak knife”, but was, for example, prosecuted only for “intentional harm”.
Violent crimes against humanity as a whole rose 18 percent to nearly 2.1 million.

“Crimes recorded by the police show little sign of returning to or exceeding pre-pandemic levels of violent crime,” said Billy Gazard of the Office for National Statistics.
“Police-reported sex crimes are the highest recorded in the 12 months of the year ending in March 2022, up 32% from the previous year,” he stressed, but adding that the changes “may reflect several factors”. including the impact of high-profile cases and campaigns on victims’ willingness to report incidents.”
A better record and more people – as opposed to a society that has become more lawless due to the deterioration of social cohesion – is often cited by politicians and officials as a reason for worsening crime statistics.
