Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said in a recorded video today that his country is officially in famine and called for a quick local and international response, announcing the death toll from starvation in the country.
More than 7 million Somalis are facing severe food shortages, with nearly half a million facing starvation, according to global reports, noting that the Somali president’s admission confirms the devastating impact of the drought on Somalis.
Ahmed Abul Ghait, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, said that Somalia is approaching a real famine due to the lack of rain, which could put millions of people at risk.
Abul Ghait noted that if Somalis do not find their strength because of that famine, members of the people and tribes will turn to actions that are not acceptable and could affect the Red Sea, East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Yemen. Stating that the issue of Somalia was discussed at the consultative meeting of foreign ministers of Arab countries, he said: This issue was discussed and we have basic ideas to help the people of Somalia.
