“Five of the nine ballistic missiles launched by China are believed to have landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone,” Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said. The announcement came after Chinese authorities conducted intense military exercises in the waters surrounding Taiwan.

Following a visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island that China, despite warnings, considers part of, Chinese authorities announced “military exercises in 6 areas surrounding the island from August 4 to 7.”

And Chinese state television announced earlier today that “The People’s Liberation Army has begun military exercises that include firing live ammunition in the waters and airspace around the island of Taiwan.”

On the other hand, Taiwan’s presidential office reaffirmed, “We will not hesitate to defend our territory,” stating that “China’s actions undermine international freedom of navigation.”
