Wreckage from a plane that crashed on the side of the Swiss Alps more than 54 years ago in 1968 has been found in a glacier, police said Friday.

The wreckage of the plane was found in the Altsch Glacier in the southwest of Canton Valais, near the peaks of Jungfrau and Munch. Canton Valle police said they found the wreckage on Thursday.

“Investigations have determined that what was found was the wreckage of a Piper Cherokee with the symbol HB-OYL that crashed at this location on June 30, 1968,” he said in a statement.

Swiss regional newspaper 24 Hours reported that the plane was carrying a teacher, a doctor and her son, all from Zurich. While the bodies of the three were recovered at the time, the wreckage remains missing to this day.

The police noted in their statement: “Techniques for finding plane wreckage in hard-to-reach areas were limited at the time of the accident, more than fifty years ago.”

24ur reported that it was a guide in the high mountains who found the wreckage on a trip he was leading in the area. Due to the phenomenon of climate change and the melting of a natural glacier, he had to change his travel route, so he reached the place where the shipwreck was found.
