EU expresses support for the Cuban people after oil tank fire

The European Union expressed this Sunday its support for the Cuban people, after the fire in the industrial zone of the province of Matanzas, in the west of the island, which caused at least one death, 121 injuries and 17 missing firefighters.

In the face of the tragic fire in a crude oil storage tank in Matanzas, Cuba, I express my solidarity with the victims and convey the support of the European Union to the Cuban people in these difficult times”, said the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, in a message posted on the social network Twitter.

The fire started last Friday, when lightning struck one of the eight fuel tanks in the industrial zone.

The Cuban authorities have indicated that more than 1,000 people have been evacuated and that operations continue to evict those who live in vulnerable places near the area of the incident.

This fire occurred just three months after an explosion at the Saratoga hotel in Havana, in which 47 people died.

The Cuban government has already announced that it has asked international experts from “friendly countries”, with experience in the oil sector, to help control the fire caused by lightning, which caused several explosions and ended up spreading the fire to another tank.
