COVID-19. Airline accounts go “green” again in the second quarter

The recovery of air traffic after the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is leading companies to return to positive results, in the second quarter, for the first time since the summer of 2019.

At the end of the first half of the year, it is time to report, which, in the case of several airlines, evidenced the positive impact of a strong recovery in traffic, especially between April and June.

THE Air France-KLM announced that it had made a profit of 324 million euros in the second quarter of the year, the first positive result since the summer of 2019, when it was affected by the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Franco-Dutch airline, which during the critical period of the pandemic lost revenue of some 11,000 million euros, has resumed activity in recent months, increasing revenue to 6,700 million euros, 143.9% more than in the same period of the previous year. last year

In the second quarter of last year, Air France-KLM had a loss of 2,137 million euros.

These results allow a partial recovery of the figures for the first quarter and puts half-year losses at 228 million euroscompared to almost 3,000 million euros in the first half of 2021.

International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes British Airways and Spanish Iberia, registered a profit of 293 million eurosin the second quarter, compared to a loss of 967 million euros in the same period of 2021, “after the strong recovery in demand in all airlines,” he said at the time.

In half-year terms, IAG recorded a loss of 654 million euros, a third of the losses recorded in the same period of 2021.

In turn, the The Lufthansa group, intervened by the German State, obtained profits of 259 million eurosin the quarter in question, compared to a loss of 756 million euros a year earlier.

Even so, in the first half of the year, the German group recorded a net loss of 325 million euros, 82% below the figure for the same period of the previous year, after an increase in income.

US carrier United Airlines also announced a return to profit in the second quarter of 2022, still below analyst expectations, largely due to rising fuel prices.

The Chicago-based company reported profits of 329 million dollars (about 322.8 million euros), between April and June, compared to previous earnings of 1.4 million dollars (1.3 million euros) not first trimester.

THE United Airlines had revenues of 12.1 billion dollars (11.9 billion euros)the highest value in the history of the airline in a second quarter, 9% above that registered before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Along the same lines, in Portugal, the SATA group, which includes SATA Air Açores (responsible for air connections between the nine islands) and Azores Airlines (connections to and from the archipelago), reported consolidated revenues of 107.9 million eurosin the first semester, which represents a growth of 51.4% compared to the same period in 2021 and 15.2% compared to the same period in 2019.

According to the Azorean airline, this figure “becomes the best first half in terms of income since there are consolidated records.”

TAP has not yet presented the results for the first half of the year, which should happen at the end of this month.

In the first half of 2021, TAP SA reduced losses to €493.1 million, which represented a recovery of 15.3%, or €88 million, compared to negative results of €582 million in the same 2020 period.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, TAP’s restructuring plan foresees losses of 54 million euros this year and a profit in 2025.

What is expected is that there will be a loss in 2022 of 54 million euros”, said the minister, in May, at a hearing in the Assembly of the Republic.

This number “is what is foreseen in the restructuring plan, we can have better, I hope we have even better, not worse”, continued Pedro Nuno Santos.

“54 million euros are foreseen, as expected in 2023 for TAP to reach operating balance and in 2025 to obtain profits”, concluded the Minister of Infrastructure.
