Taiwan’s military began a live-fire artillery exercise Tuesday to simulate repelling an attack in defense of the island, after days of intense exercises by the Chinese military, an AFP correspondent reported from the training site.
A spokesman for Taiwan’s 8th Army confirmed that the drills began in southern Pingtung County shortly after 4:00 a.m. GMT with live fire and artillery fire, adding that the drills would end at around 1:30 a.m. GMT. arrive
According to AFP, China’s military carried out the largest military maneuvers in its history, mobilizing aircraft, warships and ballistic missiles in what analysts said was a simulation of a siege and invasion of Taiwan.
The democratic and self-governing island lives under the constant threat of a Chinese attack, as neighboring China considers it part of its territory, which will one day be retaken by force if necessary.
The island regularly conducts military drills simulating a possible Chinese attack, and last month’s exercise involved repelling attacks from the sea in a “joint interception operation” as part of its biggest annual exercises.
In recent days, China has been accused of simulating a siege and invasion of the main island of Taiwan in its exercises that were supposed to end on Sunday.
Beijing condemned the trip by Pelosi, the highest elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, and suspended a series of talks and cooperation agreements with Washington, particularly on climate change and defense.
