A new book on the presidency of Donald Trump reveals discussions between the tycoon and representatives of the Army. In one of them, the then president of the United States questioned the generals why they were not “like the German generals”, ordered by Hitler.
The revelation is contained in the work “The Divider: Trump in the White House”, released this Monday exclusively by the New Yorker magazine, written by two journalists, Peter Baker and Susan Glasser. The two collected conversations between Trump and his closest military aides, which often erupted into controversies over his vision for the country and the administration.
In one of them, in 2020, as a result of the anti-racist protests of the civil rights movement, the then US president wanted the Army to participate in the repression of the protests, but without achieving the involvement of the armed forces. Trump began by complaining to the generals: “you are all losers“, and, addressing General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, he fired: “Can’t they just shoot? Just shoot the legs, or something,” according to the book’s authors.
Trump was exasperated by the resistance of the generals to his proposals and once questioned them: “Why can’t they be like the German generals?“. When one of these responded that these generals had secretly conspired to kill Hitler, Trump responded: “No. No. No. they were absolutely faithful“.
According to Baker and Glasser, Milley formed a kind of crisis cell with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, after the election Trump lost, with the goal of ensuring an orderly transition of power. They were having daily three-way conference calls, unbeknownst to Trump, which they called “plane landing calls.”
Trump wanted a parade without ‘injured kids’ because ‘they didn’t make him look good’
But the revelations don’t stop there. In 2017, while still in the White House, Trump returned from France after watching the French national holiday military parade on July 14, which he later called “a tremendous thing” and “really beautiful to watch,” immediately suggesting do something similar in the United States. But no “hurt guys” because “they didn’t make it look good”according to an American general speaking in the now published book.
When they responded that these wounded veterans (ex-combatants) are the true heroes of the country, Trump responded: “I don’t want them. They don’t make me look good,” according to Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
