Kim Jong-un was ‘seriously ill’ and could have been Covid-19

The sister of the North Korean leader announced that Kim Jong-un was “seriously ill” in an official speech, at the same time that the country decided to lift the rules to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kim Yo-jong, the younger sister of the North Korean leader and currently deputy director of the Workers’ Party of Korea’s propaganda department, was speaking to a crowd when she broke the news of her brother’s illness, according to The Telegraph: “ Although he was seriously ill with a high fever, he couldn’t even go to bed for a while, always thinking about the people he had to take care of until the end, in the face of the anti-epidemic war.”

Officially, North Korea has almost no cases of Covid-19, but since May it has registered almost five million cases of “fever”, as noted by The Guardian. In total, only 74 people have died from Covid-19, according to official figures, questioned by many experts. North Korea has a weak health system and no vaccine against Covid-19.

Kim Jong-un says “the best people in the world” are safe from the pandemic. Experts admit the outbreak may already be out of control

In a speech before health professionals and scientists, Kim Jong-un announced on Thursday the “victory” against the virus in the country. “It is a historical fact that, once again, shows the world the greatness of our State, the indomitable tenacity of our people,” said the leader.
