Electoral process in Angola is not over yet, says Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa

The Portuguese president said this Saturday in Luanda that the Angolan electoral process not yet concludedrefusing to comment on Wednesday’s elections, at a time when the provisional data from the National Electoral Commission give the ruling party an absolute majority.

“I’ll keep mine, that is pending the electoral process, not to comment on the electoral process in public as would be done in the Portuguese case”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, after a bilateral meeting with the Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, who has already congratulated the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) for the victory.

“We must respect what is typical of the specificity of each state, which is the ongoing electoral process, there are no strangers, heads of state or political leaders to comment,” added the Portuguese head of state to journalists.

The presence of observers from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) in Angola was praised by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with elements from “almost all countries”. The multilateral organization, he said, also asserts itself through these missions.

According to data released by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), when 97.03% of the votes were counted in the elections held last Wednesday, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, in power since 1975) obtained 3,162 .801 votes, ballots less polled than in 2017, when he obtained 4,115,302 votes.

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) registered a large increase, electing deputies in 17 of the 18 provinces and obtaining a historic victory in Luanda, the largest province in the country, obtaining so far 2,727,885 votes, while in 2017 it obtained 1,800,860 favorable newsletters.

However, UNITA leader Adalberto Costa Júnior questioned the MPLA’s victory on Friday and asked that an international commission compare the party’s electoral records with those of the CNE.
