The Bulgarian police arrested this Sunday more than 150 illegal immigrants, most of afghanistanwho entered the Balkan country through Turkey, the Interior Ministry announced.
According to the Government department, quoted by EFE, in Burgas, on the Black Sea coast, about 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, the agents stopped a Norman Macedonian truck with about 100 Afghans on board.
Overnight, in a rural area near the Turkish border south of Burgas, police arrested 53 undocumented migrants, suspected by authorities to be from Afghanistan, according to private broadcasters bTV and Nova TV.
In Burgas on Thursday, two policemen died after being hit by a bus, driven by a 15-year-old Syrian boy, carrying 75 migrants from that country.
A regional court ordered the preventive detention of the young Syrian, who now faces a possible prison sentence of up to 10 years.
Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev noted last week that migratory pressure in the country, particularly along the Turkish border, rose six-fold from last year and doubled between July and August.
Bulgarian authorities say they prevent the illegal entry of 1,000 people daily, mainly from Syria and Afghanistan.
