The Angolan Constitutional Court rejected, this Monday, the protection of UNITA that challenged the results of the general elections determined by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
According to the ruling, UNITA made use of “a file that, due to its expeditious and supplementary nature, is reserved by law for situations in which there are no other means to safeguard the useful effect of the alleged rights.”
However, the Constitutional Court maintains that there is a “proper action defined by law to safeguard the rights invoked”: “A subsidiary means should not be used, as is the case with the precautionary procedure.” In addition, the sentence, signed by 10 judges, indicates that “the cumulative budgets of the precautionary measure are not met.”
Taking into account the rejection, the results of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) are thus validated – the MPLA and its candidate, João Lourenço, were the winners with 51.17% of the votes, followed by UNITA with 43.95 %.
UNITA claims victory in the elections with 49.5% of the vote and accuses the CNE of “willful manipulation”
However, the leader of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, has already said that, “with the end of the Angolan law”, the party plans to go to international justice, although he did not specify how it will do so.
