Exhibition of newspapers in Alentejo marks 200 years of independence of Brazil

Centennial Portuguese and Brazilian newspapers can be seen in Alcáçovas, in the municipality of Viana do Alentejo, in Évora, starting on Sunday, as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Independence of Brazil, the chamber announced.

The exhibition, entitled “Centennial Newspapers from Brazil and Portugal: A Cultural Legacy”, will be present at the Paço dos Henriques, in Alcáçovas, where, starting at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, there will be an evocative session on the subject.

In a statement, the Chamber of Viana do Alentejo explained this Tuesday that the exhibition brings together 55 newspapers, both Portuguese and Brazilian, published continuously for more than 100 years.

“It is a journey through time through the main events (crises, wars and discoveries) that took place on both sides of the Atlantic,” he added.

Within the framework of the cycle “From the Desert of News to the Forest of Memory” and on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s independence, this Wednesday, the initiative brings together nearly “two centuries of history.”

Highlights in the exhibition are the Diário de Pernambuco, founded on November 7, 1825, which is “the oldest newspaper in the Portuguese language”, and “O Açoriano”, founded on April 18, 1835, in São Miguel, in the Azores. . , “the oldest newspaper in circulation in Portugal”, highlighted the organization.

The exhibition also reveals photographic portraits of 22 personalities from the world of culture and journalism, but also the importance of the Treaty of Alcáçovas, signed on September 4, 1479, between D. João II and the Catholic Monarchs, which put an end to the War of succession. of Castile.

In the suggestive session planned for the inauguration, the mayors of Viana do Alentejo, Luis Miguel Duarte, of the Portuguese Press Association, João Palmeiro, and of the Pernambuco Press Association, Múcio Aguiar Neto, as well as the ambassador from Brazil in Portugal, Raimundo Carreiro Silva, according to the municipality.

The exhibition, curated by João Palmeiro and Múcio Aguiar Neto, will be open to the public until April next year and is the result of a collaboration between the municipality, the Parish Council of Alcáçovas, the Portuguese Press Association and that of Pernambuco.

The festivities alluding to the inauguration end with a performance by the Grupo Choral Juvenil dos Trabalhadores de Alcáçovas, in the kiosk of the public garden, starting at 6:30 p.m.
