Scientists from Tel Aviv University in Israel suspect that bats are the source of the coronavirus that appeared and caused the disease “Covid-19”.
The journal iScience says that the scientists’ study, which includes a meta-analysis of the virology literature, shows that bats have an effective immune system that can easily eliminate viruses that are deadly to other mammals. It was also found that in 48 percent of cases, the confirmation that bats are carriers of the emerging coronavirus infection was based on the frequency of antibody detection, not the actual isolation of the virus.
Bats are traditionally considered carriers of various disease infections due to their positive serostatus, that is, the presence of antibodies that indicate infection and a well-developed immune response. This means that it is not a carrier of the virus, because it removes the virus. However, these animals are often recorded as infected with a pathogen similar to a human disease, but not dangerous to humans. Therefore, its presence does not prove that bats are carriers of the infection.
These results call into question the theory of the origin of the coronavirus and form the basis for further study of the bat’s antiviral immune abilities to develop new methods of infection control.
