Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkish forces have arrested a “high-ranking leader” of ISIS.
Erdogan told the press on board the plane during his return to Turkey from a tour of the Balkans that the leader’s name is Abu Zeid and his real name is Bashar Khattab Ghazal al-Sumaydaye.
Erdogan added that a United Nations report released in July said Al-Sumaydaye was “one of the terrorist organization’s most senior leaders.”
Turkish media have reported that a number of pieces of evidence indicate that al-Sumaydaye may actually be the man known as Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, an Iraqi who is believed to be the new caliph of ISIS.
“The connections of this terrorist in Syria and Istanbul have long been tracked, and the special services received information about his intention to illegally enter Turkey,” Erdogan added. And he added: “He was arrested during an operation carried out by the Turkish intelligence security service and the Istanbul police,” without specifying the date of this detention.
