UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that developing countries are paying a “terrible price” for the world’s dependence on fossil fuels when he visited parts of Pakistan hit by floods caused by climate change.

About 1,400 people have died in the flood, which has swept through a third of the country, destroying crops and destroying homes, businesses, roads and bridges, AFP reported.

Guterres said he hoped his visit would rally support for Pakistan, which needs at least $10 billion to rebuild damaged infrastructure.

“Pakistan and other developing countries are paying a terrible price for the intransigence of major emitters that continue to bet on fossil fuels,” he said in a social media statement before heading out to tour some of the flood-hit areas. This is crazy, invest in renewables now to end the war on nature.”

Pakistan experiences torrential and often destructive rainfall during the annual monsoon season, which is extremely dangerous for agriculture and water supplies as the country has not experienced such heavy rainfall for decades.
