The governor of Mexico’s border state celebrated the country’s Independence Day in a square filled with military and police officials, not local revelers. Intense security measures were implemented days after a suspected house bombing and threats allegedly came from the Sinaloa cartel.
On Thursday evening, Miguel Angel Riquelme, governor of Coahuila, shouted the traditional cries of independence from the governor’s palace in Saltillo. Unlike previous years, the public did not participate in the festival.
Breitbart Texas documented how state police closed all access points to the palace hours before the celebration.
Local residents are not allowed to enter the restricted area.
As night fell, 50 members of the 69th Mexican Armypearl The infantry battalion entered the ceremony and lined up.
The area around the governor’s palace was filled with more than 100 state police officers, 50 members of the Mexican National Guard, and 50 local police officers.
The drastic action was taken days after three Coahuila Attorney General’s agents were killed in a suspected home explosion. The agents killed and injured in the explosion were members of the security forces assigned to the border state attorney general’s office.
Authorities tried to argue that the explosion was caused by a buildup of gas from a leak, but the Sinaloa cartel spent little time seeking credit. The cartel named state police officials who were allegedly corrupt and said they were preparing further attacks to seize Coahuila as territory.
Editor’s note: Breitbart Texas traveled to Mexico City and the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leon to gather citizen journalists willing to risk their lives to expose the cartels that silence their communities. If the pseudonym is not used, the authors face certain death at the hands of the various cartels operating in these regions, including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas.
