Three people were killed when two small planes collided mid-air near the Colorado capital Denver shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, officials said.
The cause of the crash of the 4-seater Cessna 172 and Sonex Exynos, a domestically made aluminum light aircraft that can seat two people, is not known.
Residents near the crash site told NBC News 9 in Denver that after hearing the sound of the crash and the quick exit, they were surprised that the planes were hitting each other so flat this morning.
One of the planes crashed in a field and the other got stuck in a stand of trees near Vance Brand Airport in Longmont, Colorado, about 30 miles north of Denver.
According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, two people were found dead in the wreckage and a third person was found in the wreckage.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
According to the Associated Press, the National Transportation Safety Board said a preliminary report will be issued in about 15 days.
