Russian Deputy Defense Minister Army General Dmitry Bulgakov, who is responsible for supplies and ammunition, has been fired from his post, Defense said in a statement on Saturday.
Colonel General Mikhail Mizíntsev, who until now served as head of the National Defense Command Center, was appointed to the post.
“Army General Dmitry Bulgakov has been relieved of his post as Russia’s deputy defense minister, having received another posting,” the statement said, without further details.
The new deputy defense minister, 60, commanded the Russian army’s operations in Syria and led the assault that ended in May with the capture of the city of Mariupol, in southeastern Ukraine.
This replacement comes at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for the “partial mobilization” of reservists to bolster the offensive in Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
