Fires in Moria. Two years later, it is not known for sure how many refugees Portugal took in. And the situation in the field “has not improved”

Two years after the fires that devastated the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, it is unclear how many migrants Portugal took in. It was on September 9, 2020 that what was the largest refugee camp in Europe was destroyed, leaving some 13,000 people homeless. Shortly after, the government made itself available to receive refugees, under European agreements. But two years later, the data is uncertain.

The observer asked the Ministry of the Interior to find out how many refugees from Moria camp the Government had taken in. The guardianship of José Luís Carneiro refers to the Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Affairs. In turn, the office of Ana Catarina Mendes refers to the Ministry of Internal Administration. The Immigration and Border Service also refers to the Government.

The High Commissioner for Migration, for its part, provides some data on the Portugal-Greece Bilateral Agreement, but does not detail exactly how many —or if there are— refugees from the Moria camp. “In the field of Voluntary Relocation of Unaccompanied Foreign Children and Youth, Portugal expressed its willingness to host 500 children and youth, of which So far 273 have been received from Greece. By decision of the European Commission, the program was extended so it is still ongoing”, reads the response sent to the Observer. As part of the Pilot Project foreseen in this same agreement, “100 relocated citizens were received in full”.
