South Korea’s Office of the President has decided not to take legal action against “inaccurate” media reports of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s open-mic speeches in New York City.

“The presidential administration has conducted an internal review of whether to prosecute those responsible for what Yoon says are ‘various factual reports’ and determined that such action is not necessary,” Yonhap, a senior presidential official, said.

Another official noted: “It would be better for the ruling party, and not the presidential administration, to respond more actively to the attacks of the opposition.”

Yoon’s remarks, which are difficult to ascertain due to background noise, were translated by Korean broadcaster MBC to give the impression that the president was using profanity towards the US Congress and US President Joe Biden.

Yoon’s office later clarified that this “was not referring to Congress or the President of the United States, and that Yoon was expressing concern that the opposition-controlled National Assembly might not approve the $100 million he pledged to donate to the global fund.”
