Several bombs exploded on Tuesday near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, occupied by Russian troops, breaking glass in some buildings, but with limited damage, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported.

Inspectors from the UN agency that remain at the facility indicated that new explosions were reported this morning near the channel that supplies water to the plant’s cooling system, an essential component for the facility’s safety.

“There was no damage to the structure or equipment present at the plant, but two windows were broken in the reactor room of the unit,” the IAEA said in a statement.

On Monday, several bombs exploded in the electrical connection sector, a few hundred meters from the training center of the nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.

These explosions and bombardments are the first in several days and show “that the situation remains precarious and immediate action is needed to reduce the risk of an accident,” IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi was quoted as saying in the statement.

Grossi recalled that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is “in the middle of a war zone.”

The IAEA chief last week held talks with Russia and Ukraine to promote the creation of a security zone around the plant, and on Monday he insisted on his willingness to continue consultations in both countries.
