Karl Lagerfeld will be the subject of the next major fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The exhibition dedicated to the famous German designer who died in 2019 will be organized by the Costume Institute, the museum’s fashion department, and will have the famous Met Gala 2023 as its opening party, which is already scheduled for May 1. The announcements were made by the museum in a statement.
THE exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” (Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty) will explore “the designer’s stylistic language through the aesthetic themes that spanned his 65-year career,” the museum said in a statement. To do this, some 150 pieces will be exhibited that trace Lagerfeld’s creative career as creative director of the Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld brands, as well as the Balmain and Patou houses, and will also include illustrations.
Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away at the age of 85 in February 2019, was one of the most prominent fashion figures of the 20th and early 21st centuries, with a creative influence that crossed the boundaries of fashion and became a figure of the popular culture. The focus will be on both Lagerfeld’s working methodology and his recurring aesthetic themes from the 1950s to his latest collection in 2019. Based on a “line of beauty” theory explored by artist William Hogarth, the exhibition it will be defined by two lines, the “straight line” and the “snake line”. The first will lead the visitor through the modernist tendency of the designer and the second through his historicist tendencies. To close, there will also be a “satirical line” dedicated to Lagerfeld’s refined sense of irony and fun.

The exhibition opens to the public on May 5 and runs through July 16, 2023. The Met Gala is the party that marks the opening of the main annual fashion exhibition of the Costume Institute, the fashion department of the Metropolitan Museum . and is for the purpose of raising funds for the department.
The 2023 Met Gala also has a date set for May 1. The exhibition will take place in the main building of the Metropolitan Museum on 5th Avenue in New York. In 2022, the Met Gala had returned to its pre-pandemic model in a big way, with an exhibition dedicated to American fashion and a “Gilded Age”-themed red carpet.

This immersive exhibition will showcase his unique artistic practice, inviting the public to experience an essential part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation,” said Max Hollein, director of the Metropolitan Museum.
The exhibition will have the support of Chanel and Fendi, two of the brands for which the designer has created the most throughout his career, as well as the designer’s own brand, Karl Lagerfeld, and the Condé Nast media group.
