Bolsonaro accuses Brazil’s Supreme Court judge of “abuse of power”

The president of Brazil accused the judge of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes of “abuse of power” due to an investigation of an adviser to Jair Bolsonaro for alleged embezzlement of public money.

In an intervention broadcast live on social networks on Thursday, Bolsonaro repeatedly called “scoundreland “without shame” Moraes, who is also president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the body in charge of organizing the elections.

According to the Brazilian press, Moraes ordered the lifting of the secrecy of the bank accounts of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cesar Barbosa Cid, advisor to Jair Bolsonaro.

The order came as part of an investigation into an alleged embezzlement of public money for the private affairs of the first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro.

“Be a man once in your life, Alexandre, and spread the values (…) and if they are atypical, show the values,” Bolsonaro said.

The Brazilian president recalled that Moraes has political ties with Geraldo Alckmin, vice-presidential candidate of former head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“Alexander, you have a whole past in the Alckmin government And that’s why he wants a hostage president. You abuse power with baseness,” Bolsonaro said.

Moraes was secretary of Public Security of São Paulo while Alckmin was governor of this Brazilian state.

Bolsonaro’s insults came hours after a new opinion poll by the Datafolha institute revealed that Lula da Silva could win the presidential elections, which take place on Sunday, in the first round.

Can Lula win in the first round?

Bolsonaro assured that the polls are “wrong” and that has popular support, highlighting the large street demonstrations during their campaign events.
