Two more detainees after failed attack against Argentine vice president

An Argentine judge ordered the preventive detention of two more people, Nicolás Gabriel Carrizo and Agustina Mariel Díaz, accused of participating in the failed attack against Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

Federal magistrate María Eugenia Capuchetti decided that there were indications that Carrizo and Díaz were “secondary participants” in the “common plan” to assassinate Kirchner, according to the decision, cited by the EFE news agency. Capuchetti also decreed that Díaz, 21, and Carrizo, 27, could be released on bail of 100 million pesos (about 692,400 euros) each.

Fernando Sabag Montiel, a 35-year-old Brazilian resident in Buenos Aires, and Brenda Elizabeth Uliarte, his 23-year-old partner, had already been accused of “trying to kill” the former president of Argentina (2007-2015).

Nicolás Carrizo, known as the head of the “band of copitos”, a group of cotton candy vendors, to which the Brazilian and his girlfriend also belonged, is accused of “actively” intervening in the planning, supplying a firearm which ended up being destroyed not being used.

Agustina Díaz, a friend of Uliarte, is accused of having collaborated in the planning of the September 1 attack, when Kirchner returned home and greeted his sympathizers who, since August 22, had been holding a vigil there, in the Recoleta colony.

According to the accusation, Sabag Montiel, “taking advantage of the state of helplessness generated by the crowd,” pointed a 32-caliber semiautomatic pistol at Kirchner’s face, trying to shoot, but the weapon did not fire, despite containing five bullets.

Supporters had gathered in the Recoleta neighborhood, after the Argentine Public Ministry requested a 12-year prison sentence for Kirchner, for the alleged irregular concession of public works during his term as president (2007-2015).

On September 23, in a session of the corruption trial, Kirchner accused the prosecutors of “lies, slander and defamation” and said that he had been the victim of political and judicial persecution by the government of Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) during several years. .
