The European Commission said this Friday “to take very seriously” the security of critical infrastructure of the European Union (EU), such as the Nord Stream gas pipelines, the day the Swedish justice system revealed that the previous explosions were due to sabotage.

“I think we have talked enough about the events surrounding Nord Stream 02. We ourselves are not involved in the investigation, but we are taking the security of all critical infrastructure for the EU very seriously,” such as in the area of energy. , declared the spokesman for the European Commission, Eric Mamer.

At the institution’s daily press conference in Brussels, Eric Mamer recalled the “ongoing actions in this area”, such as the stress tests being organized with Member States.

The spokesperson for the community executive of the Interior, Anitta Hipper, recalled the recommendation launched by the institution in mid-September for the EU countries to “strengthen the resilience of […] critical infrastructure”.

“The advice [estrutura na qual estão representados os Estados-membros] is discussing the recommendation of the Commission and the progress on this issue and we already had a first meeting of experts from the countries, with ongoing discussions on the methodology to be developed for the stress tests”, said Anitta Hipper.

The explosions that affected the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September, reveal sabotagedeclared this Friday the prosecutor responsible for the preliminary investigation launched by Sweden.

“The analyzes that were carried out show remains of explosives and various foreign objects were discovered,” Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljunggvist said in a statement on Friday.

The public prosecutor is the person in charge of the preliminary investigation that is being carried out in Sweden into the four gas leaks discovered in the gas pipelines last September.

The Nord Stream system (1 and 2) supplied gas from Russia to Germany.

At the end of September there were high-powered underwater explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, which connects Russia with Germany, causing a methane leak.

Faced with such a situation, energy companies and European governments have strengthened security around energy infrastructure.

These incidents occurred as a result of Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine, which began last February, and the subsequent application of sanctions on Russians, that is, oil products, by Western countries.

The war in Ukraine further accentuated the situation of energy crisis in which the EU found itself, given its dependence on imports of Russian fossil fuels, specifically gas.
