Bolsonaro’s party backtracks, says report does not call for “other elections”

The party of the current Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, assured this Wednesday that his report does not call for “other elections”, but only for the electoral authorities to rule on the alleged failures in the electronic ballot boxes.

“This is not about asking for another election,” said the president of the Liberal Party (PL), Valdemar de Costa Neto, at a press conference in Brasilia, a day after he himself called for the annulment of part of the ballot boxes used in the presidential elections on October 30.

In this press conference scheduled after the 24-hour request from the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) for the PL to present the complete report on electronic ballot boxes, the general elections and the second round of the presidential elections, Valdemar de Costa Neto returned to He said that more than half of the electronic voting machines (before 2020) have faults, but that does not prove fraud.

The PL asks justice for the electoral authorities to find out what was the consequence of the supposed malfunction of more than 279,000 ballot boxes.

“If there are indications, the ballot boxes cannot be considered,” he said.

“If this is a stain on democracy, it must be solved now (…) we cannot keep the ghost of the 2022 elections. Ask the TSE to decide the matter. It is not about asking for another election. The intention is to discuss the history of Brazil ”, he underlined.

“It is not disturbing the inauguration of anyone, it is the law,” he insisted, referring to the inauguration of Lula da Silva on January 1, 2023.

On the same occasion, the party’s lawyer Marcelo Bessa mentioned again that the audit carried out by the party found inconsistency in polls prior to 2020 and that, therefore, “they could not have the result certified.”

According to the Party’s complaints, in the polls prior to 2020, Lula da Silva won by 52% compared to 48% for Jair Bolsonaro.

But, according to the report, in the new polls the result was the opposite: Jair Bolsonaro won with 51% and Lula Silva registered 48.95% of the votes.

Regarding the request of the president of the TSE who questioned the PL about the non-inclusion of complaints in the ballot boxes used in the first round of the presidential elections, which included the election of deputies and senators – where Bolsonaro’s party was the great winner – Valdemar de Costa Neto responded that he first wants proof of the alleged failures in the second round.

“We made the option in the second round” because there are fewer people involved, but if it turns out that it is impossible to “certify the results of the polls” the party will ask that the first round and the elections for governors, senators and deputies be repeated.
