The reading of the sentence in the case of hidden debts in Mozambique will take an unprecedented five days

The reading of the sentence in the case of hidden debts in Mozambique will last five days and begin on the 30th, the Maputo City Judicial Court announced Thursday.

“The reading of the sentence will take place over five days”said José Macarringue, judge and spokesman for the Maputo City Judicial Court.

It is the first time in Mozambique that the reading of a sentence can last more than a day, judicial sources told Lusa.

Macarringue added that the work would start at 9 am in Maputo (7 am in Lisbon).

“If the judge determines a duration of five days, it may be that the sentence will be read later, it will depend on the judge himself,” he said, when asked about the duration of the work.

The reading of the sentence will take place in the tent of the maximum security prison in Maputo, known as BO, which also hosted the trial, which lasted for seven months.

Justifying the five days of reading the sentence with the complexity of the case, the spokesman for the Judicial Court of the city of Maputo admitted the possibility that the act, which begins on the 30th, be carried out during the following weekend, in case that the judge so determines. decide

On the bench of the main lawsuit for hidden debts are 19 defendants charged by Mozambican prosecutor with involvement in a scheme that defrauded the Mozambican state in more than 2,700 million dollars (2.6 million euros) of debt contracted with international banks, between 2013 and 2014.

The loans were guaranteed by the Government of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), headed by President Armando Guebuza, without the knowledge of Parliament or the Administrative Court.
