The PSOE appealed to the re-elected President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, to talk with the opposition and carry out political reforms, after considering that the elections of November 20 did not have the expected “democratic guarantees”.
In a statement, the Spanish Socialists react to Obiang’s re-election with almost 95% of the votes and that his party monopolized the 100 seats in the Parliament of Equatorial Guinea.
The elections in Equatorial Guinea were “a farce in which Obiang was in no danger of losing”
The Spanish government, headed by PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez, has yet to comment on the presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections in Equatorial Guinea, nor has it hailed the victory of Obiang, head of state for 43 years. which makes it the longest in the worldas a result of a coup with which he overthrew his uncle, Francisco Macias Nguema.
In the note, the PSOE affirms that it shares what was expressed by the European Union, which last week asked the authorities of Equatorial Guinea a “thorough” investigation into allegations of “abuse and wrongdoing” during the elections and regretted that the environment was not “propitious for democratic, pluralistic and participatory elections”, in addition to defending the need for a “fully inclusive dialogue”.
For these reasons, the party led by Pedro Sánchez appealed to the “Ecuadorian-Guinean government to establish a political and social dialogue that facilitates the implementation” of the reforms, lamenting that “the elections did not take place in the expected conditions of democratic guarantees.” .
Finally, and looking to the future, the PSOE considered that “Equatorial Guinea must make the necessary improvements to improve democratic governance.”
“This is the only way to guarantee the full exercise of plurality and political participation,” the statement concluded.
