The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine has ordered pretrial detention for a suspect involved in the case that led to the arrest and dismissal of Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Vasyl Lozynskyi.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect, who is allegedly an accomplice of Lozynskyi in a corruption scheme. However, a source familiar with the case told the newspaper Ukrainska Pravda that this is Roman Kitner, a Ukrainian politician and businessman.

Ukrainian deputy minister arrested on corruption suspicions

The case was first reported over the weekend, following an investigation by Ukraine’s anti-corruption body (NABU). The first suspect to be arrested was Vasyl Lozynskyi, suspected of having received a bribe of 400 thousand dollars (about 368 thousand euros) benefit a company in the acquisition of generators for the country to face the winter.

Arrested by NABU investigators on Saturday, Lozynskyi was immediately sacked from his post at the Infrastructure Ministry. So far, in addition to the former minister and the businessman, there are three other suspects, who have also been arrested.

In response to the case, the Ukrainian president promised a policy of zero tolerance for corruption, indicating future changes in his cabinet, regional governments and security forces. In a matter of days, 15 Ukrainian officers are leaving the Ukrainian power structure. Only in the last 24 hours there were 11 layoffs.

Among the victims are Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office; Vyacheslav Shapovalov, Deputy Defense Minister; and Oleksiy Symonenko, Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine. The latter was fired, unlike the first two figures, who asked to leave.
