President of the Republic convinced that the controversy over Lula at the ceremony on April 25 in Parliament will not affect relations between the two countries. “The visit will be very successful,” he predicts.
The President of the Republic refuses to say whether or not the Brazilian president should speak in the Assembly of the Republic before that sovereign body decides what will happen. And he guarantees that relations between the two countries will not falter with this episode: “With Brazil, relations are always sweet, always. Brazil is sweet, Portugal is sweet, and political and diplomatic relations are very sweet. It is the superlative of sweet, they are very, very, very sweet and very good”.
The visit of the President of Brazil to Portugal, scheduled for April, is involved in controversy after the Minister of Foreign Affairs revealed that Lula da Silva will speak at the solemn session on April 25 in the Assembly of the Republic. In Parliament, parliamentary caucuses complained of being outnumbered and political questions were also raised about this turnout. But Marcelo is convinced that this will not contaminate the visit.
Does Lula da Silva speak in the Assembly of the Republic in the celebrations of April 25? After all, Santos Silva says there is no decision yet.
“It will be a very successful visit of the President of Brazil to Portugal”, the President of the Republic told journalists, on the sidelines of the visit to the 33rd Edition of the BTL – Lisbon Tourism Exchange. He also assumed that the invitation came from himself and that the visiting program “will be very rich and varied.” As for his speech in the Assembly of the Republic, Marcelo stuck to the bottom: “Let’s wait for the Assembly of the Republic”, where at that time the conference of leaders was held to decide on this matter.
Regarding Brazil and Lula’s visit, Marcelo also said that “in a democracy there are always those who like it and those who don’t, it is part of the logic. But there is one thing that is above matters of party, opinion and point of view, and that is the relationship between countries and states. When it comes to the relationship between Portugal and Brazil, between the Brazilian heads of state and the Portuguese head of state, he is above all else”.
He also took the opportunity to mention his visit to Brazil, in the middle of the presidential campaign in the country, and with Jair Bolsonaro still as president of the country. “There were times when there was a lot of speculation about the relations between the two countries, but you never heard a word from my mouth that was not considered by Brazil and the Brazilian people.”
This visit, in September, had several delicate moments for Marcelo, who avoided talking about internal issues throughout the trip. This after, two months earlier, having been in the same country with a scheduled visit with Lula that led Bolsonaro to cancel the meeting he had with the Portuguese president, creating a controversy.
Marcelo was received by Bolsonaro and in the end he avoided everything political: “I am not going to talk about internal issues in Brazil”
