US condemns “deeply problematic” statements by Lula da Silva on Ukraine: “They spread Chinese and Russian propaganda”

The White House attacks Lula da Silva, accusing the Brazilian president of “repeating Russian and Chinese propaganda without looking at the facts.” Ukraine give up Crimea? Kirby says that Lula is “wrong”.

Lula da Silva recently blamed the United States and the European Union for having contributed to the war in Ukraine. At the same time, the brazilian president has reached out to china, having visited the country last week and, on the occasion, reiterated that Brasilia and Beijing are united in resolving the conflict. Brazil does not turn its back on Russia either: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited the Brazilian capital on Monday and met with the head of state.

Brazil has already assumed that it wants to join a group of neutral countries to reach a resolution of the conflict, that has lasted for over a year. Lula da Silva was not only in China, but also in the United Arab Emirates, to emphasize the importance of ending the war in Europe. At the same time, the Brazilian president insists that Ukraine may have to cede in territorial terms, having set the example of Crimea. A position that clashes with that of the West, which continues to believe in a Ukrainian victory, contributing to it by handing over weapons and training soldiers.

This Monday, the White House national security adviser, John Kirby, broke his silence and reacted to Lula da Silva’s recent statements on the war in Ukraine and the involvement of the US and the European Union in the conflict. Quoted by Folha de São Paulo, the official lashed out at the Brazilian president, saying that he is “deeply troubled” the country’s handling of the war in Ukraine. “He suggested that the United States and Europe are somehow not interested in peace or that they share responsibility for war.”
