Morocco activated a plan that provides direct aid to the most vulnerable families after the earthquake that devastated Marrakech. The royal house also reports in a statement that this plan is open to contributions.
This Thursday, Morocco activated a direct aid plan for people affected by the earthquake that shook the country last week, with payments of up to 140,000 dirhams (12,800 euros) to fully or partially rehabilitate 50,000 damaged homes.
In a statement released by the state agency MAP, the Royal Palace reports that this plan, open to contributions from “brother or friendly countries”It was activated during a working meeting chaired this Thursday by King Mohamed VI, in which an inter-ministerial commission presented the first version of the relocation program for those affected.
This plan refers to approximately 50 thousand houses totally or partially collapsed in the five provinces affected by the earthquake, which mainly affected numerous cities and towns in the Moroccan High Atlas.
Payments will have a value of between 80 thousand and 140 thousand dirhams (7,300 and 12,800 euros).
The earthquake that occurred on Friday with its epicenter near Marrakech, and which according to Moroccan authorities had a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, caused 2,946 dead and 5,674 injured, according to the most recent balance of the Rabat Government.
This earthquake is the deadliest in Morocco from which it destroyed Agadir, on the western coast of the country, on February 29, 1960, causing between 12,000 and 15,000 deaths, a third of the city’s population.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded in the town of Ighil, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakech, was felt in Portugal and Spain.
