Israel orders evacuation of neighborhoods in central Rafah
The Israel Defense Forces are asking civilians to leave the central neighborhoods of Rafah, a city in southern Gaza where thousands of Palestinians have taken refuge with the start of Israeli military operations in the north of the enclave.
Witnesses in Rafah confirmed to Al Jazeera that Israeli authorities dropped leaflets over the city and made phone calls calling for the evacuation of certain areas in Rafah, including a neighborhood near the Kuwaiti Hospital.
The move comes after Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian part of the Rafah crossing, which borders Egypt. It appears to indicate an expansion of Israeli operations in Rafah, a city from which, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, some 110,000 people have already left.
