Hundreds of environmental activists march in Germany against Tesla factory

The organizers announced their intention to travel the distance between the Fangschleuse train station and the only European electric car factory owned by the American manufacturer Tesla.

Hundreds of environmental activists are participating again this Saturday in a protest march near the Tesla car factory in Gruenheide, on the outskirts of Berlin, the Efe agency reported.

According to the same source, the organizers announced their intention to cover the distance between the Fangschleuse train station and the only European electric car factory owned by the North American manufacturer Tesla, owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

During the protest, some protesters advanced with slogans such as “Down with actions, up with water protection!”, and the police moved a large contingent to the scene.

“We are moved,” said a police spokesperson about the demonstration, quoted by Efe.

According to the authorities, access to the A10 motorway in Freienbrink was closed in both directions.

Police advised motorists to drive with caution in the area, while the situation overnight and into the morning was calm, the spokesperson said.

On Friday, clashes broke out between protesters and police.

Several activists tried to enter the Tesla facilities, but were detained by police.

Tesla has been manufacturing electric cars in Gruenheide since 2022 and has always rejected any accusations of environmental pollution.

Some of the activists who called protests against Tesla today justified their actions due to the environmental dangers posed by the factory, but they also extend their criticism to other car brands.

“This system does not matter if it is Tesla, Volkswagen or Mercedes: the car companies and their political supporters are responsible for selling our livelihoods,” said Lucía Mende, spokesperson for the organization “Disrupt Tesla”, in a press conference prior to the parade.

This citizen initiative in Gruenheide accuses Tesla and the Brandenburg state government of not paying enough attention to the interests of the region’s inhabitants.

“They are going ahead, they are not listening to the sensitivities of the local population,” said the initiative’s spokesman, Steffen Schorcht.

For its part, the “Turn Off the Tap on Tesla” alliance claims to see dangers to health and local water reserves due to possible contamination caused by the factory.

“Tesla’s luxury cars pollute and consume scarce drinking water around the world,” said its spokesperson, Karolina Drzewo, who criticized the continued planning of factory expansion, including deforestation, despite the fact that most citizens voted against him in a poll in Gruenheide.

The alliance calls for the abandonment of “inefficient and climate-damaging private transport.”

Tesla has been producing electric cars in Gruenheide since 2022. The company has always rejected the accusations, stating that water consumption has decreased and is below the industry average.
