The EU announces 896 million euros for humanitarian aid to Sudan

Funding from Brussels will be channeled through humanitarian organizations to the most vulnerable people suffering the consequences of the conflict not only in Sudan, but also refugees.

The European Union (EU) announced that its participation in financing announced this Monday in Paris, at the end of an international conference in support of the people of Sudan, will be 896 million euros.

During the conference, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Security Policy called for a ceasefire in Sudan and access to humanitarian support for the country’s population.

After speaking at the conference, Josep Borrell considered, on social networks, that the situation is “The worst humanitarian crisis in the world.”

In a final statement, diplomats, United Nations officials and aid agencies gathered at the conference called on parties to the Sudan conflict to end human rights violations and allow humanitarian access.

It was also requested, through a declaration signed by 14 countries – namely, Germany, France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti and Chad, but also the UN – that “all foreign actors” stop providing armed support to warring factions.

The war in Sudan, which began on April 15, 2023 and has already claimed at least 14,000 lives, was triggered by the rebellion of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces against the Sudanese Armed Forces, starting a conflict that involved the capital, Khartoum. and other parts of the country.

The conflict also caused one of the worst waves of displacement in the world, with more than 8.5 million internally displaced people and refugees.
