The People’s Republic of China has accused NATO of provoking discord by directly condemning comments by the organization’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, about Beijing’s alleged support for Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Lin Jian, at a news conference in Beijing, suggested that Stoltenberg should “do something concrete for a political resolution of the crisis”, in reference to the war in Ukraine.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is trying to “give the impression that he is moving away from this conflict, to avoid sanctions and maintain trade flows,” Stoltenberg said during a visit to the United States, Ukraine’s main military backer.

“Unless China changes course, allies will have to impose a price. There have to be consequences,” Stoltenberg argued.
The People’s Republic of China claims to be neutral in the conflict but has never condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and, since the start of the war, has hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin on several occasions.
