Far from Germany but glued to the giant screen to watch the Portugal vs Slovenia match. There were (many) nerves, sadness but everything ended with a lot of joy. See the images.
The match did not promise to be easy. For 90 minutes neither Portugal nor Slovenia managed to score. Extra time followed, where nerves became evident: Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty from a set piece in the 11th minute and Diogo Costa saved (he did not yet know what was coming) an almost certain goal for the Slovenians.
Many fans were in Frankfurt to watch this Euro 2024 round of 16 match at the stadium, but thousands more joined in on the various giant screens spread across the country. It was a game of nerves, sadness and, in the end, a lot of joy. It was almost reminiscent of Portugal-England in 2004, when Ricardo stopped a penalty without gloves.
This time, Diogo Costa was the star of the show, achieving a historic feat: he saved all the penalties on penalties and Portugal did not waste the opportunity, scoring them all. The Portuguese team is now in the quarter-finals, where they will face France.
