The Republican announced an agreement with Fox News for a debate on September 4 with US Vice President Kamala Harris. The Democratic candidate’s response is expected
“I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. It remains to be seen whether the Democratic candidate has agreed to both the debate and the date.
Trump’s message, posted at almost midnight (on the east coast of the United States, at dawn in Lisbon), came hours after the vice president’s candidacy obtained the support of more than half of her party’s delegates in an online vote.
Kamala Harris is expected to officially accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for the November election after polls close on Monday.
On July 21, 81-year-old US President Joe Biden withdrew his bid for a second term and endorsed the vice president.
Biden dropped out after a disastrous performance in a CNN debate against Trump in June, during which he appeared severely weakened.
A second televised debate between Trump and Biden is scheduled for September 10 on ABC.
Last week, Donald Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said it was “inappropriate” to schedule a debate before Harris was officially nominated as the Democratic candidate.
The 78-year-old Republican candidate recently said he was abandoning tradition and would not debate Harris, who is nearly 20 years his junior.
Last month, Harris, a former California attorney general, challenged Trump to a face-to-face debate.
“Donald, I hope you’ll reconsider meeting me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face,” Harris said at a campaign rally in Atlanta.
In his message, Trump said the debate would be held in Pennsylvania, named the moderators and said it would be held in public.
Fox News confirmed on its news portal that the debate would take place in front of a live audience and would follow rules similar to those of the Trump-Biden debate hosted by CNN on June 27.
“I look forward to meeting and debating Kamala Harris on September 4th,” Trump added, saying the date was “convenient and appropriate” as it precedes the start of early voting for the presidential election on September 6.
